Moving a washing machine? Follow these 5 steps
5 February 2025
Moving a washing machine can be quite a challenge. It’s a large and heavy appliance that’s sensitive to damage. With the right preparation and a few handy tips, you can ensure your machine makes the move without any issues and everything works properly at your new location.
Step 1: Disconnect the washing machine
Before you start moving, it’s important to properly disconnect the washing machine. This prevents leaks and damage to the appliance. Turn off the machine and unplug it. Close the water supply and disconnect the water hose from the faucet. There may still be water in the hose, so keep a bucket nearby. Then, remove the drain hose and empty it into the bucket. Place a towel under the filter, located at the bottom front of the appliance. Open the filter cover to let the remaining water drain out of the machine. Finally, secure the drum with transport bolts to prevent it from shaking or being damaged during transport.
Step 2: Pack the appliance properly
Now that you’ve disconnected the machine, it’s time to pack it for the move. It’s important to protect the appliance from bumps and scratches. Wrap the corners and edges of the washing machine with moving blankets or bubble wrap. This prevents damage to the casing and also protects your walls and stairs while moving it.
Step 3: Lift the washing machine out of the house
It’s not just about protecting the washing machine; your safety matters too. Always lift it with someone else to prevent injury. Communicate clearly with each other and if it gets too heavy to lift in one go, place the machine gently on the ground. You can also wear gloves for better grip. If you need to go down the stairs, ask a third person for guidance and help if it becomes too difficult to lift.
A furniture dolly or hand truck makes it easier to move the washing machine. Place the appliance upright on the dolly and secure it with ropes or straps. Be cautious of steps and other obstacles. Have a second person assist with supporting the machine to prevent it from tipping over.
Step 4: Place the machine in the van or car
During transport, make sure the washing machine stays upright. This prevents internal parts from being damaged. Use straps or ropes to secure the machine, ensuring it doesn’t shift during the ride. Drive carefully to avoid any bumps.
Step 5: Reconnect the washing machine
Once you’ve arrived at your new home, bring the appliance inside with at least two people and consider using a dolly or hand truck. Make sure to place the machine on a flat, stable surface so it works properly and doesn’t cause noise.
Reconnect the washing machine to the water supply and electricity. Ensure the water hoses are tightly connected to prevent leaks. Then, remove the transport bolts. This step is very important, as failure to remove them will cause damage when you turn the machine on. Finally, run a short cycle to check everything is working.
