FAQs about detergent in the washing machine

Do you ever wonder how much detergent to use or how to remove detergent residue from your washing machine? In this blog, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about detergent.
Question 1: How much detergent should I use?
The amount of detergent you use depends on the wash load, how dirty your laundry is and the type of washing machine you have. Most detergents have a dosage guide on the packaging; it’s important to follow these instructions. Using too much detergent is wasteful and can be harmful to your washing machine and clothes. It can cause detergent buildup in the machine and on your clothing, leading to clogs and unpleasant odors. Using too little detergent means your clothes won’t get properly cleaned.
Always follow the recommended dosage on the packaging, but adjust it if your machine isn’t full or if your laundry is very dirty. It’s better to use slightly less detergent than too much. This not only saves you money but also prevents issues with your washing machine.
Question 2: What is eco-friendly detergent?
Eco-friendly detergent is detergent that contains fewer harmful substances for the environment. It’s often biodegradable and free of harsh chemicals like phosphates or parabens. These detergents are just as effective as regular detergents but they reduce the strain on waterways and the environment. If you want to wash more sustainably, choose eco-friendly detergent and use the eco mode on your washing machine.
Question 3: What is detergent residue?
Detergent residue or detergent build-up is a foam-like or soapy substance that can accumulate in your washing machine. It usually happens when too much detergent is used or when the detergent doesn’t dissolve properly at low temperatures. Detergent residue can build up in the drum, pipes and rubber seals of your washing machine, which can cause unpleasant odors and clogs.
Fortunately, detergent residue is easy to remove and prevent. Run a cleaning cycle without laundry in the drum and add half a liter of cleaning vinegar to the detergent compartment. Do this at least once every six months to keep your washing machine fresh. Additionally, don’t use too much detergent and opt for a liquid formula when washing at low temperatures. It dissolves better in cold water and helps prevent build-up.
Question 4: What should I do if detergent build-up is left in the machine?
Leftover detergent can cause build-ups that affect the performance of your machine. You can prevent this by always using the right amount of detergent and performing regular maintenance. If detergent residue is left behind, follow these steps:
- Remove the detergent drawer from the machine and clean it thoroughly.
- Run a cleaning cycle to clear any remaining residue.
Question 5: Which compartment should I put detergent in?
Most washing machines have a drawer with three compartments. The compartment labeled 1 or marked with a dash is for pre-wash detergent. Use this if you want to do a pre-wash for extra dirty clothes or stubborn stains. The main detergent goes in the compartment labeled 2 or with two dashes. If you use fabric softener, it goes in the compartment with a flower/star symbol.
