Spring cleaning? Don’t forget your fridge and washing machine!

19 March 2025

The big spring cleaning is the perfect time to thoroughly clean your appliances. Dirty smells, leftover food and accumulated grime make your appliances less fresh and less efficient. It’s time to clean your washing machine, fridge and freezer. Here’s how to do it!

Give your washing machine a refresh

A clean washing machine prevents bad odors and ensures cleaner laundry. Start by cleaning the rubber edges of the drum, where dirt and soap can accumulate. Use a cloth with warm water and vinegar. Don’t forget the soap dispenser. Take it out and rinse it thoroughly. Then run an empty wash at 90 degrees with a cup of cleaning vinegar or a special machine cleaner. Leave the door open after every wash to prevent mold.

How to clean your fridge

A tidy, clean fridge is more hygienic and helps food stay fresh longer. Take everything out and throw away expired products. Remove the shelves and drawers and wash them with warm water and a little dish soap. Clean the inside of the fridge with a mixture of water and vinegar. Don’t forget the door seals. Dry everything well and put the products back, preferably organized by date.

Defrost and clean your freezer

A frost-free freezer works better and uses less energy. That’s why it’s important to defrost and clean your freezer twice a year. Unplug the freezer and place a towel to catch the melting water. Remove all the items and place them in a cooler. No time or patience to wait for the freezer to defrost? Speed up the process by placing a pan of hot water in the freezer and closing the door. You can also use a hairdryer to defrost the freezer more quickly. Once the ice has melted, clean the inside with a soapy solution. Dry the freezer thoroughly before turning it back on and putting the items back.

Don’t forget the back of your fridge-freezer combination

Dust and dirt behind your fridge-freezer combination lead to poor cooling and higher energy consumption. Gently pull the appliance forward and dust off the back with a soft brush or vacuum. This helps extend the lifespan of your fridge and freezer.

Check and clean your fridge’s drain

Many fridges have a drainage hole where moisture runs to. Sometimes this gets clogged, causing water to accumulate in the fridge. Gently poke through the hole with a skewer or straw. Then pour some warm water with baking soda through the opening to wash away the dirt.

Keep your appliances fresh with simple tricks

Once your appliances are clean, you’ll want to keep them fresh. Here are some more tips:

  • Prevent bad odors in the fridge by placing a container of baking soda or half a lemon in it. Make sure to replace the lemon on time, as it can mold if left too long, which isn’t hygienic.
  • Clean the inside of your fridge monthly and regularly check the expiration dates of products.
  • Use less detergent in the washing machine to avoid soap residue. Leftover soap can cause musty odors and streaks on your clothes.
  • Clean the rubber of the freezer regularly to ensure the door seals properly.

With these cleaning tips, your washing machine, fridge, and freezer will last longer and always smell fresh.
